BECOMING A HOST CONGREGATION
THE PARTNERSHIP
Our model differs from traditional shelters. It’s a unique blend of congregational partners, hospitality and using existing space. It’s a sustainable approach to providing shelter for families. Our congregations welcome families, providing shelter and meals.
The congregation prepares a room for each family ensuring families stay together, never experiencing separation. Other shelters may separate the father from the mother and children, teen sons from a single mother and their younger siblings or young adult children from the rest of the family.

THE ROLE OF HOST CONGREGATIONS
Host congregations often provide financial support to Family Promise for family support services, transportation and other programs.
Volunteers offer hospitality to our guest families. People of all ages can find a way to help during Host Week whether it’s setting up rooms, baking cookies, staying the night or greeting families in the evening. They provide meals, overnight hospitality, and friendly faces to our families.
Volunteer jobs during host week include:
- Cooking and/or hosting dinner
- Spending the evening with guest families chatting, tutoring kids or playing games
- Sleeping overnight at the congregation
- Coordinating children’s crafts and activities
- Donating needed supplies for the host week
- Setting up and breaking down guest families’ rooms
