FAMILY SUPPORT
THE NEED
Jacksonville faces a critical shortage of shelter beds for families experiencing homelessness. Combined with rising rent costs, this creates a maelstrom for struggling families. Jacksonville is the Eviction Capital of Florida with more per 1,000 residents than any other city. More than 3,300 Duval County Public Schools students are homeless; couch surfing, living in motels, cars, storage units or shelters.
We couldn’t ignore the calls for help even when our shelter is full. Our solution is the Family Support program. It combines case management, resources and encouragement with the goal of moving families from uncertainty to stability.
This is not a drop-in service. Appointments are required.

HOW IT WORKS
In the initial case management meeting with the family, we identify barriers, develop a financial plan, review resources in the community and create a game plan. Families engage with Family Promise staff on regular basis as they work on their goals. The family also has access if needed to computers, hygiene items and cleaning supplies.
This can be as simple as providing work boots for a new job, a place to do laundry to the more complex challenges of finding housing or employment.
If we divert families from shelters by providing assistance now, it’s better for everyone. It saves the community money. Most importantly, it’s healthier for the families, more stable for the children and provides the promise of hope.
